JOLIET, ILLINOIS – 05/19/07 – MATCH RACE MANIA
All Seven Second Field AGAIN…and some MORE personal bests. It was a beautiful day with perfect weather and a great crowd on hand. We welcomed 2 new members to our group, John Baio and Rory Cook with the only Ford in the group. The day was filled with fast cars and some monster wheelies.
#1 qualifier Bill Houghton with a 7.81 wowed the crowd with an unbelievable wheelstand and picked up an extra $100 from the Match Race Mania announcers who picked his wheelie as the best one at the 4pm qualifying run.
Round one had Mike Priola (#4 with his personal best 7.93) facing his brother Joe (#5 with a 7.946). Joe took the win with his own personal best 7.91. 2nd up was Jerry Sevik (#3 with a 7.89) facing Ed Moore (#6 with a 7.949). Jerry took the win with a 7.81 against Ed Moore’s personal best 7.89! The 3rd pair up turned into a solo run for John Baio (#7 with a 7.974) when Joe Stiles (#2 with a 7.87) had a starter issue under the tunnel. By the time Joe’s car was running and ready to go, John was already staged. He ran a 10:45. The last pair up was Bill Houghton against Jim Irving (#8 with his own personal best 7.979). Bill won with a 7.801…
Congratulations to ALL of you for those personal bests. It was very impressive. In qualifying, Dan Priola also had his own personal best with an 8.11 and Rory Cook had an 8.14.
The semi finals had John Baio facing Jerry Sevik. This writer understood John’s nick name of “boom boom” when he had a major explosion mid track. Jerry took the win with a 7.89. The race to watch though was the run featuring Bill Houghton and Joe Priola. Even though it wasn’t the finals, this was the kind of racing that makes the Outlaw Superstocks so great. Both cars did MONSTER wheelies and it was side by side the whole track. When the lights came on at the end of the track, Bill had the win with a 7.90 against Joe’s 7.91. Talk about close. Thanks for the great race you guys! That’s what this is all about.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time to run the finals between Jerry Sevik and Bill Houghton. We’ll do that at Byron on Sunday May 27th.
See you then….
